A Michigan judge has sentenced a mother and her boyfriend to life in prison after juries found them guilty in the fatal abuse of 6-year-old Giovanni "Chulo" Jennings.

According to prosecutors, the boy was rushed to the hospital after Jennings called 911 reporting he was not breathing; he died later that day. Evidence and Investigation
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said investigators reviewed the defendants' phones and interviewed the other young children who lived in the home. Medical staff observed extensive injuries, and autopsy photos documented bruises and lacerations across Giovanni's body as well as a BB-gun wound to his shin.
- Autopsy photos showed injuries to the scalp, face, torso, arms, hands and lower body.
- Prosecutors say Giovanni was confined to a makeshift "pen" in the corner of a bedroom, slept on a wooden pallet, and was blocked from seeing or leaving the room by black curtains and barricades.
- Less than two weeks before his death, prosecutors allege Giacchina stapled the boy face-first to a wall and sent a photo of the child bound to the wall to Jennings; both allegedly laughed about the incident.
- When first questioned, Jennings told police the child had been with his biological father, a statement investigators say was false; prosecutors allege the pair conspired to blame the father.
Sentencing
On Wednesday, Judge Michael Warren sentenced both Jennings and Giacchina to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition, Giacchina received two extra years for firearms-related charges after records showed he was a convicted felon prohibited from possessing weapons found in the home.
"Giovanni Jennings deserved love and protection from the adults in his life," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said after the guilty verdicts. "While we cannot bring him back, these verdicts hold Daniel Giacchina and Elaina Jennings accountable for the horrific abuse of an innocent 6-year-old boy who should still be with us."
This case drew attention for the severity and duration of the alleged abuse, the involvement of other children in the household, and the forensic evidence presented at trial. The convictions and sentences reflect the court's finding that the defendants' actions and omissions led to the child's death.
