ALAMOSA, Colo. — Barry Morphew, 58, who has been charged with first-degree murder in the 2020 disappearance of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, was taken back into custody after prosecutors say he violated the terms of his release.
Morphew was released on a $3 million bond after pleading not guilty in the case surrounding Suzanne Morphew, who vanished on Mother's Day 2020 during a bicycle ride. Authorities arrested him nearly a year after her disappearance; those charges were dropped two weeks before a scheduled 2022 trial. A grand jury later returned an indictment in 2025.
Alleged Bond Violation and Hit-And-Run
Prosecutors opposed release on the grounds Morphew was a flight risk, in part because of a pattern of using the same license plate on multiple vehicles. The judge who set bail imposed strict conditions: Morphew could leave home only for doctor appointments, medical emergencies, work and meetings with his legal team.
Judge Amanda Hopkins said she could not revoke bond on her own without a request from prosecutors, but she ordered Morphew to remain at home after a woman contacted the court saying he had struck her vehicle and fled.
“[The driver] observed driving aggressively prior to striking two vehicles,” Hopkins said, summarizing the report. The driver said Morphew offered $300 for the damage, refused to provide identifying information and drove off when she threatened to call police.
GPS Data and Prosecutors' Motion
After receiving the hit-and-run complaint, prosecutors obtained data from the company monitoring Morphew’s GPS ankle device. In a motion seeking full revocation of bond, they say the data show Morphew traveled to Denver International Airport (DIA) on Aug. 28, 2026 — despite having permission to leave home that day only for an approved work-related reason. The GPS reportedly showed him leaving the airport almost immediately.
Prosecutors wrote that Morphew’s attorney said he was not working at DIA and suggested Morphew may have been there to pick up his daughter. After leaving the airport property, the GPS allegedly placed him in areas near hotels and a mall at various points that day before the reported collision.
Arrest and Next Court Date
Following the judge’s order to revoke the temporary release, deputies with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office arrested Morphew on an outstanding warrant and took him into custody without incident, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Morphew is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, when prosecutors will argue to keep him detained while the murder case proceeds.
