Prince William interrupted his summer break to post a rare, personal message responding to a wave of destructive wildfires across Europe. In a social media post signed simply "W," he expressed sympathy for those affected and praised the emergency personnel battling the blazes.
"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating wildfires across France, Spain and the UK," he wrote. He added:
"We are deeply grateful to the firefighters, emergency services and volunteers working tirelessly in extraordinarily difficult conditions. These events are a stark reminder of the challenges posed by an increasingly extreme climate and the importance of protecting both people and nature."
Fires are burning in several regions: around Bordeaux in France — a situation President Emmanuel Macron described as "completely unprecedented" — near Madrid and Valencia in Spain, and in Scotland's Cairngorms National Park. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned that "this climate emergency is exceeding every threshold and scale that scientists have long warned Spain and Europe as a whole about."
Connection to the Earthshot Prize
William's remarks echo his environmental work through the Earthshot Prize, which he launched in 2020 to support innovations that protect the planet. At the Prize's launch, an aide said William wanted to be able to look his children in the eye and know he had used his position to tackle climate change.
He is due to travel to Mumbai later this year for the 2026 Earthshot Prize event. Reflecting on the initiative at a recent Royal Foundation event, William said the Prize "keeps my environmental anxiety at bay because I can actually see some of the things we are doing are bringing change. We can do this. There are actually tangible benefits, and it helps me sleep at night."
The prince's personal statement underscores growing concern among leaders and scientists about extreme weather events and their links to climate change, while highlighting ongoing efforts to fund and scale practical environmental solutions.
