CVS Pharmacy now dispenses common prescription medications for dogs and cats at nearly 9,000 U.S. locations, including antibiotics, allergy treatments, flea and tick products, insulin and pain relievers. Owners can provide a written prescription or have their veterinarian send it directly; prescriptions may be picked up in-store or delivered when available. Pet prescriptions can be managed via CVS.com and the CVS Health app, with additional e-prescription features coming soon. CVS stresses this service supplements but does not replace veterinary care; the FDA advises confirming dosing, administration and side-effect guidance before leaving the pharmacy.

CVS Pharmacy has started dispensing common prescription medications for dogs and cats at nearly 9,000 locations across the United States, giving pet owners another convenient option for filling eligible prescriptions alongside their own medications.

What CVS Is Offering

The service covers frequently prescribed pet-only drugs, including antibiotics, allergy medications, flea and tick treatments, insulin and pain relievers. Pet prescriptions are handled much like human prescriptions: owners can present a written prescription from their veterinarian or have the veterinary office transmit it directly to CVS.

Pickup, Delivery and Digital Management

Once CVS receives a prescription, customers may pick it up in store or choose home delivery where available. Pet prescriptions can also be added to a customer’s CVS.com profile and managed through the CVS Health app. CVS has said additional electronic prescription features will roll out in the coming months to further streamline the process.

“We're proud to be a trusted partner in our patients' health care journeys,” said Sid Tennet, Senior Vice President and Interim President of Pharmacy and Consumer Wellness at CVS Health. “With the addition of pet medication dispensing, CVS Pharmacy can now serve every member of the family.”

More Than Meds: Expanded Pet Selection

CVS is also expanding its pet assortment beyond prescriptions to include food, grooming supplies, dental care items, toys and wellness products from brands such as Milk-Bone, Greenies, Churu and Temptations, alongside its own Pet Central line.

Important Notes For Pet Owners

This new dispensing option is designed for convenience and does not replace veterinary care. Veterinarians remain responsible for diagnosing conditions, deciding on appropriate therapies and writing prescriptions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) emphasizes the veterinarian’s central role and encourages pet owners to confirm how a medication should be administered before leaving the pharmacy or clinic.

  • Confirm the correct dose and how often to administer the medicine.
  • Ask whether the medication should be given with food and how to handle a missed dose.
  • Learn the possible side effects so you can monitor your pet and seek help if needed.

For busy families, chronic conditions or post-operative care, having a nationwide pharmacy option can save time and reduce the number of errands. While pharmacy access adds convenience, routine veterinary follow-up and professional medical guidance remain essential for your pet’s health.
