On May 3, the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that a drone had targeted its external radiation control laboratory.
The laboratory is located outside the nuclear plant's perimeter. The IAEA said there were no reported injuries and it remained unclear whether the strike had caused any damage to the facility.
An IAEA team already at the site has formally requested access to the laboratory to conduct an inspection. Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated that any attacks or strikes near nuclear facilities can pose significant nuclear safety risks.
Rafael Grossi, IAEA: "Any incident close to a nuclear site raises safety concerns and requires immediate, unimpeded access for inspection and verification."
The IAEA statement underscores ongoing international concern over operations and security at nuclear sites in conflict zones.
