AI Industry Backers Launch Major Primary Ad Push Ahead Of 2026 Midterms

A political advocacy group backed by prominent figures in the artificial intelligence sector has begun deploying a significant war chest to influence competitive primary contests ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Leading The Future Makes First Major Ad Buy
Leading the Future is investing $500,000 in an advertising campaign to support former Department of Defense official Laurie Buckhout in next month’s Republican primary for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, where she is seeking to challenge incumbent Democratic Rep. Donald Davis. According to reporting by Fox News Digital, this $500,000 ad buy is the group’s first major political expenditure.
The organization is financed in a personal capacity by OpenAI President and co‑founder Greg Brockman and his wife Anna Brockman, as well as Ben Horowitz, co‑founder of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Leading the Future recently said it and affiliated organizations have secured more than $125 million in commitments and held over $70 million in cash at the start of the year.
National Strategy and Stated Goals
"This is only the beginning of what we expect will be sustained engagement at both the state and federal levels throughout the 2026 cycle," co‑strategists Zac Moffatt and Joe Vlasto told Fox News Digital.
The group says it will focus on supporting candidates who back a national regulatory framework for AI intended to keep the United States competitive globally, address national security concerns, and protect children, users and communities.
Planned Spending In Other Races
Leading the Future also plans additional investments in at least two Illinois contests. The group intends to spend seven figures in the open‑seat Democratic primary in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District to support former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and is backing former Rep. Melissa Bean in Illinois’ 8th Congressional District.
Other initial contributors from the technology and venture capital community include Joe Lonsdale, co‑founder of Palantir Technologies, Addepar and OpenGov and a managing partner at 8VC, and longtime investor and philanthropist Ron Conway, co‑founder of SV Angel.
Leading the Future says the North Carolina ad push, where early voting is about to begin, represents an opening move in a broader plan to influence races at both the state and federal levels during the 2026 cycle.
