An 11-year-old girl was struck and later died after being hit by a school bus in Bath Beach, Brooklyn, on Feb. 5 around 3 p.m. The child was taken to Maimonides Hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to her injuries.

Police identified the driver as a 62-year-old man who allegedly fled the scene but was later found and questioned. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the girl in a marked crosswalk as the bus turned and struck her. The NYPD says the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been announced.

An 11-year-old girl was fatally struck by a school bus in the Bath Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn on Thursday, Feb. 5, city authorities said.

The collision occurred at about 3 p.m. at the intersection of 23rd Avenue and Bath Avenue, according to the New York Police Department. The child was rushed to Maimonides Hospital in "critical condition" and later died from her injuries.

Police identified the bus operator as a 62-year-old man. Authorities say the driver initially left the scene but was later located in another Brooklyn neighborhood and taken in for questioning as the investigation continues. No criminal charges had been filed as of the latest update.

Surveillance video obtained by CBS New York reportedly shows the girl walking across a marked crosswalk — where pedestrians have the right of way — as the school bus makes a right turn from 23rd Avenue onto Bath Avenue and strikes her.

Eyewitness account: Wael Alghithi, a 22-year-old worker at Bath Healthy Deli and Grill, told the New York Daily News that the girl had just purchased candy moments earlier. "She came in every day. She bought chocolate and a soda," Alghithi said. He described seeing the child dragged under the bus and said she was still holding the chocolate after the impact.

Authorities have not released the victim's name. The NYPD said the investigation remains active as detectives review video evidence and interview witnesses. Officials ask anyone with additional information to contact the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad.
