A major winter storm swept through the eastern U.S. on Sunday, blanketing cities in snow and creating hazardous travel conditions. Washington, D.C., saw sledding and fresh powder near the Capitol and Lincoln Memorial, while Arlington residents turned local hills into sled runs by the Marine Corps War Memorial. New York City experienced heavy street and park snow, including accumulation on the Brooklyn Bridge and in Central Park. Farther south, freezing temperatures in Nashville produced dangerous ice and raised risks for slick roads and power issues.

A powerful winter storm swept across the northeastern United States on Sunday, transforming major cities into snow‑filled scenes and producing hazardous travel conditions and widespread disruption.

Scenes From the Capital Region

In Washington, D.C., residents carved fresh tracks through powder near the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, while families bundled up for sledding and winter play along the National Mall. Across the Potomac in Arlington, Va., neighborhood hills became improvised sled runs for children, framed by the wintry silhouette of the Marine Corps War Memorial.

New York City Blanketed

New York City saw snow pile along sidewalks and at iconic crossing points, including the Brooklyn Bridge. Plows worked to keep major streets passable as pedestrians navigated slushy intersections in Manhattan. Central Park filled with walkers braving steady snowfall, and many paused to take in the unusually quiet, snow‑softened cityscape.

Ice Hazards to the South

Farther south, the same system dropped freezing temperatures that produced ice rather than deep snow. In Nashville, vehicles and surfaces were coated with icicles, creating the risk of slick roads and raising concerns about potential power outages where ice can weigh down lines and trees.

Travel and Safety

The storm produced treacherous travel conditions across affected areas. Motorists were urged to exercise caution, allow extra travel time, and avoid nonessential trips while crews worked to clear roads and respond to outages and accidents.

Note: Local conditions varied by neighborhood. Check with city agencies or local media for the latest road and transit updates if you plan to travel.
