Protesters Trap Federal Agents in Taco Giro Parking Lot During ICE Operation

TUCSON, Ariz. — Federal agents serving search warrants were briefly trapped in a gated parking lot outside Taco Giro on North Grande Avenue Friday morning after demonstrators surrounded law-enforcement vehicles, officials said. The operation was part of a multi-agency effort tied to a yearslong investigation into alleged immigration and tax violations.

Teams from ICE Homeland Security Investigations, IRS Criminal Investigation and other federal partners were executing 16 search warrants across southern Arizona, an ICE spokesperson said. Officers arrived at the restaurant around 9 a.m., before it opened; by about 10 a.m. between 100 and 200 protesters had gathered, chanting anti-ICE slogans and holding matching signs that read "Illegal Arrests Require A Hood."

A smaller, more confrontational group of roughly a dozen people became aggressive near midday. Video and officials indicate that someone threw a bottle at an ICE vehicle and another person looped a bike lock around the gated exit, temporarily blocking agents inside the lot.

"Special agents and officers from ICE Homeland Security Investigations, IRS Criminal Investigation and other federal partners are executing 16 search warrants in southern Arizona as part of a yearslong investigation into immigration and tax violations," an ICE spokesperson said. "Multiple individuals are in custody."

Responding units, including a SWAT team, deployed crowd-control measures such as flash-bang devices and pepper spray while making arrests. Authorities cut the bike lock with a saw and escorted agents out of the parking lot; footage shows smoke in the air as law-enforcement vehicles departed amid jeers from the crowd.

Earlier in the operation, agents executed a search at a nearby residence; photos from that scene show multiple men in handcuffs being placed into a vehicle. Officials said additional information about the investigation and the arrests would be released as it becomes available.

Note: Reporting on this developing incident is ongoing and details may be updated as authorities provide more information.
