An 82-year-old woman walked away with only a minor leg injury after her car was struck and pushed along railroad tracks by a CSX freight train in South Brunswick, New Jersey, officials said.

Police say the driver stopped her gray four-door sedan Wednesday afternoon around 2 p.m. after seeing flashing crossing signals warning that a train was approaching, but she did not realize her vehicle was positioned on the tracks. The freight locomotive made contact and continued, pushing the car with the woman inside for approximately a quarter of a mile before the engineer brought the train to a stop.

Photos released by the South Brunswick Police Department show the sedan lying perpendicular across the rails directly in front of the locomotive. Emergency crews transported the woman to a local hospital, where she was treated for a minor leg injury.

The collision forced the closure of Route 535 in both directions for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene and investigators examined the incident. Authorities continue to review the circumstances that led to the vehicle stopping on the tracks.
