Japan’s Prime Minister Says Trump Called After Xi Conversation — Taiwan Remarks Raise Stakes

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said former U.S. president Donald Trump phoned her after speaking with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and expressed personal friendship. Takaichi earlier warned that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could be "survival-threatening" for Japan and might require military action, breaking with Japan's policy of strategic ambiguity. She did not confirm whether Taiwan was discussed; Trump said he had spoken with both leaders and praised his relationships with them.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Tuesday that former U.S. president Donald Trump phoned her after he spoke with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, conveying a personal show of friendship.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Takaichi said Trump told her they are "extremely good friends" and that she should call him anytime. She credited Trump with reaching out following his conversation with Xi.

"President Trump told me that he and I are extremely good friends and that I should call him any time," Takaichi told journalists.

Takaichi, a hard-line conservative and the first woman to serve as Japan's prime minister, drew attention earlier this month when she warned that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could create a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan and might require a military response. Those remarks marked a departure from Japan's long-standing policy of strategic ambiguity regarding Taiwan.

Taiwan is a self-governing island that Beijing regards as part of its territory and for which Chinese officials have not ruled out the use of force. Takaichi did not say whether the phone call with Trump included discussion of her comments about Taiwan.

Trump confirmed he had spoken with both Takaichi and Xi, saying he had "a great talk" with each leader and praising his personal relationships with them. "I have a very good relationship with her... I also had a very good talk with President Xi of China," he said, adding that he expects positive developments from the region.

No further details about the conversations were released. The exchanges underscore the sensitivity of Taiwan-related remarks and the high diplomatic stakes among Washington, Tokyo and Beijing.
