Suicide Attack at Federal Constabulary HQ in Peshawar Kills Officers, Injures Civilians

Three suicide attackers targeted the Federal Constabulary headquarters in Peshawar early Monday. One detonated explosives at the gate, killing three FC officers; two others were shot dead before reaching a parade area. Several civilians were wounded and hospitals declared emergencies. No group has yet claimed responsibility, though authorities often suspect the Pakistan Taliban in similar attacks.

Three suicide attackers struck the Federal Constabulary (FC) headquarters in Peshawar early on Monday, killing three FC officers and wounding several others, including civilians. One attacker detonated explosives at the main gate while two others were shot dead as they tried to force their way into the compound.

What officials reported

Mian Saeed Ahmad, Peshawar Capital City Police Officer, said the assault began when three militants approached the headquarters. "One bomber blew himself up on the gate, while two others tried to enter the premises but were gunned down by FC personnel," he said. The three officers stationed at the gate were killed in the blast.

Ahmad added that a large number of FC personnel had been on open ground inside the compound for morning parade drills when the attack occurred. The attackers were on foot and did not reach the parade area; a prompt security response prevented a greater loss of life, he said.

Casualties and response

At least six civilians were reported injured and taken to Lady Reading Hospital, where authorities declared an emergency along with Khyber Teaching Hospital. Hospital spokespeople said the wounded were in stable condition. The surrounding area was quickly cordoned off by security forces while investigations and security checks continued.

Responsibility and context

No group has claimed responsibility. Authorities frequently point to Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in similar assaults; the TTP is distinct from, but allied with, the Afghan Taliban. The attack comes amid a recent surge in violence in Pakistan, including a suicide bombing outside a court in Islamabad less than two weeks earlier that killed 12 people.

Official reactions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and praised the security forces for their timely response, calling for the perpetrators to be identified and brought to justice. President Asif Ali Zardari also voiced strong condemnation and offered condolences, commending the courage of security personnel.

Ongoing situation

Security operations and investigations are continuing. Officials have warned the public to remain vigilant and to follow instructions from local authorities as they work to secure the area and gather evidence.
