The FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after an apparent violent altercation in the cockpit. Passengers and crew reportedly restrained an alleged attacker after one pilot was said to have been stabbed, and an emergency alert and dramatic loss of altitude were recorded. Israeli jets were scrambled amid hijack fears; authorities say all on board are safe and a recovery flight is en route. Investigations are ongoing and some details remain unconfirmed.

A FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency diversion to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday after an apparent violent altercation in the cockpit. The aircraft landed safely and authorities say everyone on board is now reported safe, though several passengers and crew were visibly shaken.

What happened

According to multiple Israeli media outlets and regional officials, a physical fight between the aircraft's two pilots broke out shortly after takeoff. Flight tracking data show the jet — FlyDubai flight 1073, a Boeing 737 Max 8 — transmitted an emergency alert soon after departure and, at about 08:21 local time, recorded a rapid loss of altitude of more than 17,000 feet in roughly two minutes.

Several passenger accounts and social media videos described chaos on board. Some witnesses said one pilot was stabbed during the struggle and that passengers and other crew members intervened to restrain the alleged attacker. One report said off-duty pilots in the cabin were urged to help secure the cockpit after the attacker was removed.

Security response and official statements

Fearing a possible hijacking, Israel reportedly scrambled fighter jets while the episode unfolded. Israeli officials later said the situation was under control and that efforts were underway to repatriate the passengers. FlyDubai and Saudi officials had not immediately confirmed all reported details, and some claims — including the attacker's nationality, which was reported by Israeli sources as Omani — remain unverified.

Israeli leaders and public figures reacted strongly. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said authorities were handling the situation. Israel's national security minister described the incident in stark terms on social media, and other politicians and diplomats praised the passengers' courage and said they were relieved the outcome was not worse.

Next steps and context

A recovery flight was reported to be en route to Tabuk to collect the diverted passengers. Authorities in the countries involved are investigating the incident, and FlyDubai will likely cooperate with aviation and law-enforcement probes. Incidents that force emergency diversions for crew conduct are rare but not unprecedented; in 2022, two Air France pilots were suspended after an onboard altercation.
