Pete Hegseth on Sept. 25 urged service members and their families to register and request absentee ballots ahead of the midterm elections, pointing them to the Federal Voting Assistance Program for guidance. He highlighted the Federal Post Card Application and the Federal Write‑In Absentee Ballot as tools for deployed voters and reminded commanders to encourage voting without endorsing candidates. Hegseth has campaigned for Republican candidates and faces articles of impeachment filed by Rep. Thomas Massie; as of Sept. 25 there was no public response. FVAP data show active‑duty voter registration fell to about 67% in 2024, while roughly 71% of 1.3 million active‑duty members are eligible for absentee ballots.

Pete Hegseth urges troops to register to vote ahead of midterms
On Sept. 25, Pentagon official Pete Hegseth posted a nearly two-minute video urging service members and their families to register to vote and request absentee ballots ahead of the midterm elections.
Hegseth explained practical options for military voters: they can use the standardized Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) both to register and to request a ballot, and service members who are forward deployed whose regular ballot is delayed can use the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB) to cast a protected vote.
"Regardless of your home state or current duty status, you can use a standardized federal postcard to register and request a ballot, and if you're forward deployed and your standard ballot is delayed, you can use the federal write-in absentee ballot. All of these processes are straightforward and protected by law," Hegseth said.
He directed troops and families to the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website for step-by-step guidance on registering and receiving absentee ballots. Hegseth also addressed commanders directly: "You're not telling them who to vote for. You're just telling them to vote," underscoring that commanders may encourage participation without directing political choice.
The message comes as Hegseth has been active on the campaign trail supporting Republican candidates. In May he traveled to Kentucky to back former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein in a GOP primary challenge to Rep. Thomas Massie; Gallrein went on to win the primary and is favored in the heavily Republican district.
Hegseth's push to boost registration arrives amid a slight decline in military voter registration. FVAP's most recent report shows about 67% of active-duty personnel were registered to vote in 2024, a three-percentage-point drop from 2020. Of roughly 1.3 million active-duty members, about 71% are eligible to cast absentee ballots and receive special voting protections because they are stationed away from their official voting residence.
Hegseth has also faced political backlash: on Sept. 15 Rep. Thomas Massie filed articles of impeachment accusing him of breaching his oath and abusing authority as a military leader. As of Sept. 25, neither Hegseth nor the Pentagon had publicly responded to Massie's allegations.
