Republican Paul LePage, the former governor of Maine who is running for Congress in the state's 2nd District, said at a Monday news conference that his son's father‑in‑law — who holds a valid work permit — is being wrongly targeted for deportation.
"My son's wife's dad is here legally," LePage said. "But he's being deported because he came from a country that is not to the liking of certain people in Washington. That's not right."
LePage, a noted ally of former President Donald Trump, argued that the man should be allowed to remain in the United States because he holds authorized work documentation. He framed the action as unjust and politically motivated.
Trump first endorsed LePage's congressional bid late last year and reaffirmed his support in June. On Truth Social, Trump praised LePage as "A proven America First Fighter" and wrote that "Paul LePage is a WINNER, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement — HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!"
LePage has been an early and vocal supporter of Trump in past election cycles, at one point describing himself as "Donald Trump before Donald Trump became popular" and saying they are "cut from the same cloth."
The allegation raises questions about how immigration enforcement decisions are made and whether individuals with valid work authorization are being improperly targeted. It also intertwines a personal immigration dispute with a high-profile congressional campaign and the backing of a former president.
