Large International Study Finds 1,200+ Genetic Variants Tied to the Big Five Personality Traits

The largest genetic study of personality to date linked more than 1,200 genetic variants to the Big Five traits using DNA and questionnaire data from up to 1.14 million people across 46 cohorts. There is no single gene for personality; instead, many tiny genetic effects add up to produce consistent, replicable patterns that generalize across ages and countries. The same genetic signals also relate to health, activity patterns, education, income and neighborhood choice, suggesting broad connections between genetics and life trajectories.

A major international analysis led by the Revived Genomics of Personality Consortium and Michigan State University has linked more than 1,200 genetic variants to the Big Five personality traits. Drawing on DNA and questionnaire data from up to 1.14 million people across 46 cohorts, the study shows there is no single "personality gene," but the combined effects of many small genetic differences produce measurable and replicable patterns in personality and life outcomes.

What Researchers Did

Participants from 46 research cohorts provided genetic samples and completed standardized questionnaires measuring openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. The team performed large-scale genome-wide analyses to identify loci associated with these traits and then tested whether aggregated genetic profiles predicted traits across different ages, countries and family relationships.

“Personality traits are associated with many genetic variants, but even the largest effects of individual genetic variants are still very small,” said Ted Schwaba, lead author and faculty member in Michigan State University’s Department of Psychology. “However, even though any individual genetic variant makes very little difference in personality, the effects of many variants together can be more sizeable.”

Why This Matters

By mapping how many small genetic influences add up to shape personality, researchers can better understand links between temperament and long-term outcomes such as health, education and occupational choices. These insights may prove useful for health researchers, vocational specialists and social scientists, but the authors emphasize the need for further study and careful consideration of ethical implications—especially around privacy, prediction limits and avoiding genetic determinism.

Future work will need to expand diversity in genetic samples, clarify causal pathways between genes, environment and behavior, and assess how genetic information might be used responsibly in research and practice.
