Six Supercars Seized After Motorway Convoy Alternately Speeded And Crawled At 17 mph

A convoy of five Lamborghinis and a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen was intercepted by Greater Manchester Police after members of the public reported dangerous driving on motorways around Manchester on the night of September 2. By the end of the operation, all six high-performance vehicles had been seized and their drivers removed from the cars.

What Happened

Officers from GMP's newly formed Transport Policing and Crime Command responded to multiple calls describing a group of supercars that were at times speeding, weaving across lanes and wheel-spinning, then dramatically slowing to roughly 17 mph on the motorway. Initial reports referred to activity on the M66, but the convoy was located on the M62.

Police Response

Two Lamborghinis were stopped as they left the carriageway, and GMP said it used "specialist tactics" to bring the remaining vehicles to a halt in Rochdale. The operation temporarily closed the road while officers secured the scene and dealt with the drivers.

Legal Action

All six vehicles were seized under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002. Chief Inspector Danny Kabal highlighted recent changes that enable officers to seize qualifying vehicles without first issuing a formal warning in certain circumstances. He warned that GMP will not tolerate careless, inconsiderate, anti-social or dangerous driving and reminded motorists that vehicles can be seized and drivers may face prosecution or, where proportionate, arrest.

Police have appealed for witnesses with dashcam or CCTV footage from the night of September 2 to come forward to assist with enquiries.
