Investigation and Arrests
West Mercia Police announced that four men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit vehicle theft after a probe recovered 33 stolen Defenders with a combined value of more than £600,000 (roughly $800,000). The thefts took place across six police force areas in England and Wales between September 2024 and May 2025.
How The Ring Operated
Authorities say the group travelled widely to source high-value Defenders and moved stolen vehicles in convoys alongside so-called "mission vehicles" — police named a blue Toyota Yaris and a red Volkswagen Golf among them. Mobile phones seized from suspects provided crucial data that helped investigators reconstruct routes, communications and links between thefts.
Chop Shop In Bristol
Police allege the stolen Defenders were taken to a workshop in Bristol owned by suspect Benjamin Hobbs, which officers describe as the ring's "chop shop." In footage released by police, the owner of one stolen Defender brought his original key to the workshop and was able to fit it into the ignition of a dismantled vehicle — the key turned, confirming the remnants were his Defender.
Sentencing
Following the investigation, known as Operation Liondale, all four men pleaded guilty and were sentenced at Hereford Crown Court on September 18. Leonard Hodgkins received the longest term of four years and nine months, Benjamin Hobbs was jailed for four years and four months, Jimmy Butler received three years and eight months, and David Hodgkins was given three years in prison.
Defender models are famed for surviving decades of heavy use — from farm work and off-roading to military service — but even their toughness could not protect them from being stripped and sold as parts by a determined criminal crew.
