At least 10 people have died after consuming illegally produced alcohol in Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh, Indian authorities say. Some local officials have reported a higher toll of 11. Police opened a formal inquiry on Sept. 6 after residents in the area fell ill following consumption of spurious liquor.
Investigation Underway
Local officials and investigators believe the deaths may be linked to methanol (methyl alcohol) contamination. Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal told reporters that post-mortem examinations are in progress and screenings have begun in the two affected villages, Nauroja and Dogra, to identify any additional cases.

"Ten people have been identified as deceased," Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal said. "The post-mortem examinations and other procedures related to the deceased are being carried out."
Detentions And Possible Supply Chain
Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujaniya said authorities have detained roughly 10–12 people as part of the probe and are conducting systematic interrogations to trace the source. Investigators say there are indications of a criminal network from Lalitpur in neighboring Uttar Pradesh that may have supplied methyl alcohol into the area.
Regional Context
Although this incident occurred in Madhya Pradesh, reports note a wider problem of counterfeit and adulterated alcohol in the region. Earlier in August, 13 people died after drinking illegal liquor in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat. Media reports also say three officials from Gujarat's Directorate of Prohibition and Excise were suspended amid probes into recent illicit-alcohol incidents in the state.

What Is Methanol And Why It’s Dangerous
Methanol is a colorless, volatile liquid found in products such as antifreeze, varnishes and some fuels. It can sometimes be produced accidentally during poor distillation, but it is also illegally added to bootleg spirits to increase apparent potency cheaply. Methanol poisoning can cause symptoms similar to heavy alcohol intoxication — nausea, dizziness, vomiting and loss of consciousness — and can be fatal.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization note that methanol poisonings from adulterated alcohol have occurred in many countries. Treatment is most effective when started early; experts say timely hospital admission within roughly 10–30 hours after ingestion improves the chance of successful treatment.

Medical teams and government officials are actively screening residents in the affected villages. Anyone who suspects they or someone they know has consumed tainted alcohol should seek immediate medical attention. Authorities are urging communities to report illegal alcohol production and distribution to police.
