A Civey poll for the Tagesspiegel puts The Left (Die Linke) in the lead in Berlin at 21%, with the CDU on 19% and the AfD on 18%, six weeks before the 20 September state election. The Greens are at 17% and the SPD at 12% in the survey of around 3,000 respondents (±3.5 percentage points). A contrasting Insa poll published on 23 July showed the AfD ahead, underscoring polling volatility ahead of the vote. The conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), led by Friedrich Merz, are polling at 19%, placing them narrowly behind The Left. The far‑right Alternative for Germany (AfD) stands at 18% (up 1 point), while the Greens remain at 17%. The centre‑left Social Democrats (SPD) trail at 12%.
Poll Details
The survey of around 3,000 respondents was conducted between 20 July and 3 August. The maximum reported margin of error is ±3.5 percentage points, and Civey recorded a two‑point rise for The Left since early July.
Contrasting Polls
A separate Insa survey published on 23 July — commissioned by the Nius news portal — produced different results, putting the AfD in first place on 19%, with the CDU and The Left tied on 18% each, the Greens on 16% and the SPD on 13%.
Berlin's state election on 20 September is one of three regional votes that month, alongside Saxony‑Anhalt and Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern. Pollsters and analysts expect the AfD to make significant gains in several states.
Opinion polls remain subject to uncertainty: declining party loyalty and increasingly late voting decisions make accurate weighting more difficult for polling institutes.
With close numbers and contrasting surveys, the race in Berlin remains fluid as voters head to the polls in September.
