The Left, which topped Berlin's state election with 25.7%, has voted to open exploratory talks with the Greens and the SPD about forming a new government. Delegates approved the move overwhelmingly, and separate bilateral meetings will precede three-way discussions. Only three-party coalitions can now command a majority in Berlin. If talks succeed, Elif Eralp could become The Left's first Berlin mayor and the first person of Turkish heritage to lead the city.

The Left, which emerged as the clear winner in Berlin's state election, has moved to open exploratory talks with the Greens and the Social Democrats (SPD) about forming a new state government in the German capital.

Party Decision and Next Steps

Delegates at a party conference approved the initiative by a large majority on Friday evening. The Left's leadership is expected to formally invite both the Greens and the SPD, with discussions potentially starting next week. The party plans to hold separate bilateral meetings with each potential partner before progressing to three-way exploratory talks.

Responses From Potential Partners

The Greens have accepted the invitation to exploratory talks. Berlin SPD leader Steffen Krach has also signalled willingness to participate, while stressing that exploratory talks do not automatically lead to formal coalition negotiations.

Election Context

In Sunday's vote for Berlin's state parliament, The Left received 25.7% of the vote and finished first. The Christian Democrats (CDU) followed with 18.8%, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) 16.3%, the Greens 14.3% and the SPD 12.1%.

Berlin is currently governed by a CDU–SPD coalition. After the election, only coalitions that include three parties have the numbers to secure a parliamentary majority, making a three-party arrangement the likely path to form a new government.

Leadership Stakes

If exploratory and subsequent coalition talks are successful, The Left's lead candidate, Elif Eralp, would become the party's first mayor of Berlin and the first person of Turkish heritage to lead the German capital—an outcome with symbolic as well as political significance.

Note: Exploratory talks are a preliminary stage; they aim to establish whether the parties have enough common ground to begin formal coalition negotiations.
