The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that newborns delivered in the United States during the nation’s 250th anniversary period will receive a first-of-its-kind commemorative Social Security card. The limited-edition card will display the official Freedom 250 logo in black ink but will otherwise function exactly like a standard Social Security card.
The commemorative cards will be issued only to original Social Security numbers assigned through the agency’s Enumeration at Birth program for infants born between July 2 and December 31, 2026. Babies born before July 2 or after December 31, 2026 — as well as anyone requesting a replacement card — will receive the regular, non-commemorative design.
According to the SSA, eligible families do not need to apply or register separately. The cards will be provided automatically as part of the routine birth registration process at hospitals, birthing centers and through licensed midwives. The SSA also said there will be no additional cost to families or taxpayers for the commemorative cards.
SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the Freedom 250 artwork honors 250 years of American independence and highlights milestones in the nation’s history, including the creation of Social Security more than 90 years ago. The agency posted the announcement on its official social account on July 1, 2026.
The SSA warned parents to remain vigilant for scams. The agency emphasized it will not call, text, or email families requesting payment or additional personal information to issue the commemorative card. Any such contact should be treated as fraudulent and reported to the SSA.
Freedom 250 is a public–private initiative backed by the Trump administration and is distinct from America250, the congressionally created commission established in 2016 to mark the semiquincentennial. The commemorative Social Security card is part of a broader rollout of anniversary-themed items and federal designs under the current administration, which has also introduced a limited-edition “Patriot Passport” and proposed commemorative coin designs.
