China’s foreign ministry has confirmed the detention of U Min Zin, a US-based scholar and director at a Myanmar-focused think tank, on allegations of espionage and endangering national security. Chinese and international media reports say he was detained in early June after disappearing in Kunming, a Chinese city near the Myanmar border.
According to multiple reports, including AFP and The New York Times, Min Zin was arrested at Kunming airport on 3 June while attending a meeting. Chinese officials have provided few public details about the case. His family has expressed concern and has been following up with the US consulate in Guangzhou, sources told AFP.
Min Zin is executive director of the Myanmar Institute for Strategic and Policy Studies (ISP-Myanmar), a Thailand-based think tank that researches Myanmar’s politics and regional actors, including China’s role and economic interests. He is also reported to be enrolled as a PhD student at the University of California, Berkeley and splits his time between Thailand, the United States and Myanmar.
Born into a generation of pro-democracy activists, Min Zin was active in Myanmar’s 1988 student movement. He fled to Thailand to avoid arrest by the then-military government, later studied in the United States, and returned to Myanmar in 2010.
The arrest is notable because it is uncommon for China to detain US citizens on national security charges, and it comes shortly after high-profile diplomacy between Washington and Beijing — including a recent visit to Beijing by US President Donald Trump — and just before a planned visit to China by Myanmar’s military leader, Min Aung Hlaing. Beijing maintains significant ties with Myanmar’s ruling junta, which seized power in 2021.
Sources have not released formal charges or public evidence, and independent verification remains limited. Min Zin had been scheduled to speak at a conference in Kathmandu later this month. Observers say the case could have diplomatic implications and underscore tensions over China’s approach to security and foreign nationals in sensitive border regions.
