Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez warned that the city could face a "very long, very brutal" summer of organized teen and street takeovers unless city leaders take stronger action. Lopez told Fox News Digital that current policies under Mayor Brandon Johnson limit how officers can respond to large, often-viral gatherings that have taken place in recent months.
Alderman's Concerns
Lopez said Chicago has become a destination for illegal street takeovers—large, organized congregations of youths that frequently involve vehicles and other risky or criminal activity. He argued participants often act with impunity because police are not authorized to fully intervene in ways he believes are necessary.
"They know they can get away with it, and they know that oftentimes our police are handcuffed themselves from stopping and interceding at these events," Lopez said. He added that officers are not being empowered to box in crowds, corral suspects, make arrests, or impound vehicles as the law allows.
Social Media And Enforcement Gaps
Lopez also criticized city efforts to identify and hold accountable those who promote takeover events on social platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. He said authorities have not done enough to trace the root organizers who publicize these gatherings.
Recent Incidents
Lopez's remarks follow a South Side takeover over the weekend in the Gresham neighborhood, where video shows a crowd around a car that was already on fire; footage captured someone throwing an object into the burning vehicle and a subsequent explosion, according to ABC 7. No arrests were reported at that event, which Lopez cited as an example of weak enforcement.
Footage from a March 30 takeover showed crowds climbing on cars, blocking streets and dancing in intersections. Officials issued three curfew violations during that incident and arrested a 16-year-old girl on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and disorderly conduct.
Hyde Park resident Jason Hale told local station Fox 32 that about 30 vehicles were damaged during a takeover in his neighborhood, estimating roughly $1,000 of damage to his car alone.
City Response
Mayor Brandon Johnson warned residents via X about a possible "teen trend" forming on the South Side and urged parents to keep children away from such gatherings because they "are dangerous and can often turn violent." Fox News Digital reached out to the mayor's office for further comment.
