Heightened Police Presence After Recent Teen Takeovers
The Tybee Island Police Department has announced an increased, multi-agency law enforcement deployment after a recent wave of so-called teen takeovers in the region. Authorities pointed to an unpermitted pop-up event on April 4 near the Pier and Pavilion where officers reported hearing a single gunshot, prompting hundreds of attendees to scatter.
"Rest assured that we have heard you and that public safety will always be our top priority," Capt. Emory Randolph of the Tybee Island Police Department told Fox News Digital.
Beginning Thursday ahead of the festival, residents and visitors will notice an "abundance" of officers from local and state agencies converging on the island. Specific security measures announced by police include a road safety checkpoint on Highway 80, designated emergency lanes on main thoroughfares, and the temporary closure of the 14th and 16th Street parking lots.
Arrests, History And Recent Moves
Orange Crush carries a history of disorder on Georgia beaches. In the early 1990s the event earned a reputation for violence and mass arrests; Savannah State University formally distanced itself from the festival in 1991 because of public-safety concerns. In recent years, reported arrest totals include 26 arrests in 2023, 54 in 2024 and 22 during a weekend in 2025 when Tybee Island again hosted large crowds.
Amid resource and logistical concerns, the event briefly moved to Jacksonville, Florida, three years ago before returning to Tybee Island in 2023. Organizers’ original website has since been taken down.

Police emphasize they will use every available resource to protect residents and visitors and ask everyone attending or living on the island to follow the law and cooperate with emergency personnel. Local leaders say they are trying to balance public safety with the reality of a large, returning spring-break crowd.
