One Gwinnett County police officer was killed and a second was seriously wounded after a man opened fire inside a hotel room Sunday morning near Stone Mountain, Georgia, officials said. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews of Decatur, was also shot by an officer and taken to a hospital; he is expected to survive and will be booked after release.

Authorities said the two officers had responded to a Holiday Inn Express about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta after someone in South Carolina reported an apparent fraudulent credit-card charge at the hotel. The officers spoke with the front desk clerk, who identified Andrews as the guest occupying the room, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said.

After learning Andrews had an active DeKalb County warrant for failure to appear, officers went to the room to make an arrest. Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure said Andrews met the officers at his door and invited them inside.

"They began discussing the scenario of the incident with him," McClure said. "At some point the suspect produced a handgun and, in an unprovoked attack, opened fire on our Gwinnett County police officers."

Chief McClure identified the officers as Pradeep Tamang and David Reed. Tamang, 25, who joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in 2024, died of his injuries at a hospital. Reed, who joined the department in 2015, was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

The shooting suspect, Kevin Andrews, was shot by one of the officers and transported to a hospital for treatment.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp released a statement saying he was "mourning the loss of a brave officer" and praying for Reed's recovery, adding that the shooting is a tragic reminder of the daily dangers faced by law enforcement.

Andrews has been charged with one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault upon a public safety officer, and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The GBI, which customarily investigates officer-involved shootings in the state, is leading the active probe and will turn the case over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office when the investigation is complete.
