Mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie Reported Missing Near Tucson; Authorities Call Situation "Very Concerning"

Arizona authorities are conducting an active search for Nancy Guthrie, 84, the mother of NBC "Today" co‑host Savannah Guthrie. She was last seen Saturday evening at about 9:30 p.m. at her home near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue, north of Tucson, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Search and Investigation Underway
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said a relative reported Nancy Guthrie missing to deputies around noon on Sunday. The sheriff described the scene at the home as troubling and said investigators have mobilized extensive resources.
“We’re pretty much just throwing everything at this that we can. Guthrie is 84 years old and is not of good physical health, and so naturally that’s a great concern,” Sheriff Nanos told reporters. He added that conditions observed at the residence have raised “some concerns for us as well.”
Nanos confirmed Nancy Guthrie is of “good sound mind” but has physical ailments that limit her mobility. Investigators have not ruled out foul play; the department’s criminal investigations and detective homicide teams are involved.
How the Search Is Being Conducted
Search efforts include helicopters, infrared cameras and drones. The sheriff’s office has also requested assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Volunteers are assisting search-and-rescue teams, and investigators have asked neighbors to review home surveillance and doorbell camera footage for any relevant video.
NBC correspondent Tom Winter reported that the sheriff has coordinated with federal and local partners to widen the search perimeter.
Family Response
Savannah Guthrie issued a brief statement to NBC’s "Today" on Monday morning: “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”
Authorities continue to investigate and ask anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
