Two Killed As Torrential Rains Batter Greece

On Jan. 21, torrential rain and flash flooding struck Athens and other parts of Greece, killing two people and flooding homes and businesses, authorities said.
A woman died in the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada after a car was swept away by floodwaters, a fire brigade official told Reuters.
Earlier the same day, a coast guard officer was swept into the sea at a port in the Peloponnese while attempting to secure a small boat. 'He fell into the sea while he was trying to tie up a small boat in the harbour,' a coast guard official said.
The fire brigade reported receiving hundreds of calls to pump water from flooded buildings across Athens as crews worked to clear roads and assist residents. Emergency services remained on alert as authorities warned the storm system was expected to move east across the country on Thursday.
Impact: Homes and businesses were inundated, roads were disrupted, and rescue teams responded to multiple emergencies across affected areas.
