The collision occurred at about 11 a.m. local time (5 a.m. ET) on a busy stretch of the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway, the major route linking Ogun State to the commercial hub of Lagos. Local authorities said the vehicle was traveling on the expressway when the crash happened.
"Anthony Joshua is well and responding to treatment," Babaseyi Boluwatife, a spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, told CNN.
Boluwatife said Joshua, who has family ties in Ogun and was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, sustained only "minor bruises." Two other occupants in the vehicle, including the driver, were killed. Police have not released the identities of the deceased.
A video circulating on social media shows emergency responders pulling Joshua from the wreckage. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash and have not provided additional details about the cause.
The boxer could not immediately be reached for comment. Officials and local residents have offered condolences to the families of the victims as investigations continue.
