Fourteen people — including eight high school wrestlers and two coaches — were hospitalized after a school bus collided with an SUV near Denver on Dec. 6. Emergency responders say five patients are in critical condition and nine are non-critical. All four occupants of the SUV and 10 passengers from the bus were taken to area hospitals; police reported that one or more people were ejected. Investigators are determining whether speed or alcohol were factors, and the Lakewood Police Department is leading the probe.

Fourteen people were hospitalized after a school bus carrying a high school wrestling team collided with an SUV in the Denver metropolitan area on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 6.

Lakewood Police said officers were dispatched at about 7:33 p.m. to the intersection of Kipling Parkway and West 6th Avenue, where first responders found a school bus and an SUV involved in the collision. Students had been returning from a wrestling tournament at the time of the crash.

A spokesperson for West Metro Fire Rescue confirmed to PEOPLE that 14 individuals were transported to local hospitals. Of those, five were listed in critical condition and nine were non-critical. All four occupants of the SUV were hospitalized, along with 10 people from the bus — eight students and two coaches.

“Several people from both vehicles were transported from the scene to area hospitals for treatment,” Lakewood Police said, adding the crash “involved one or more individuals being ejected.”

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision and are working to determine whether speed or alcohol were contributing factors. The Lakewood Police Department is the lead agency handling the inquiry.

Mesa County Valley School District 51 confirmed that multiple students and wrestling staff were hospitalized. The district urged the community to avoid sharing unverified information and to rely only on official updates from District 51 or the Lakewood Police Department to protect families and the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Officials said the families of those involved have requested privacy. PEOPLE contacted Lakewood Police and the school district for additional comment but did not immediately receive a reply.
