Two Adults Killed, Two Children Airlifted With Major Injuries After Pickup Crashes Into Tree on Highway 50

Two adults were killed and two children — an 8-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl — were airlifted with major injuries after an eastbound Chevrolet pickup ran off Highway 50 near Kyburz, California, on Dec. 6. Emergency crews spent several hours extricating the children from the wreckage before they were flown to a Reno hospital. Investigators suspect unsafe speed may have been a factor; toxicology testing will be conducted as standard in fatal collisions. Highway 50 was briefly closed and has since reopened, and authorities have not released the victims' identities.

Two adults were killed and two children were seriously injured after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 50 near Kyburz, California, on Saturday, Dec. 6, authorities said.

What Happened

At about 3:15 p.m., an eastbound Chevrolet pickup ran off the roadway and struck a tree on the south side of the highway, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Placerville spokesperson Officer Andrew Brown told local media. Two adults in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene; officials said they appeared to be the parents of the children who were seated in the back.

Rescue and Injuries

Emergency crews worked for several hours to extricate an 8-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl from the wreckage. Both children were airlifted to a hospital in Reno, Nevada, with what authorities described as 'major' injuries.

Investigation

Investigators suspect the driver was traveling at an unsafe speed, which may have contributed to the crash. While officers do not currently believe impairment was a factor, Brown said toxicology testing is standard procedure in fatal collisions. Highway 50 was temporarily closed while responders worked on scene but has since reopened; local officers remained at the area following the reopening.

Ongoing Details

The names of the adults and the children have not been released. Multiple outlets, including PEOPLE, The Sacramento Bee, CBS News and Fox40, reported the incident; PEOPLE said it had contacted the CHP for additional comment but had not received an immediate response.

Note: This report is based on information provided by the California Highway Patrol and local news organizations. Authorities continue to investigate the cause and circumstances of the crash.
