Trump Endorses Bruce Blakeman for New York Governor After Stefanik Withdraws

Donald Trump endorsed Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman for New York governor after Rep. Elise Stefanik withdrew from the GOP primary. In a Truth Social post, Trump called Blakeman "MAGA all the way" and praised his cooperation with ICE, Border Patrol and law enforcement. Blakeman said he was "grateful and blessed" and vowed to work with Trump to make New York safer and more affordable. Under New York GOP rules, candidates need 25% at the February convention to reach the June primary ballot.

Former President Donald Trump on Saturday endorsed Bruce Blakeman, the two-term Republican Nassau County executive from Long Island, for governor of New York — one day after Rep. Elise Stefanik withdrew from the crowded GOP primary.

Trump had earlier indicated he might refrain from making an early endorsement, but Stefanik's exit cleared the way for him to publicly back Blakeman, a longtime ally.

Trump Praises Blakeman's Record

In a Truth Social post, Mr. Trump described Blakeman as "MAGA all the way," and lauded his work with law-enforcement agencies. "As Nassau County Executive, he is working tirelessly with the Brave Heroes of ICE, Border Patrol, and Law Enforcement to Keep Our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Safeguard our Community, and Ensure LAW AND ORDER," Trump wrote.

Blakeman responded on social media that he was "grateful and blessed" for the endorsement and pledged to partner with Trump to make New York "safe and affordable." Sources familiar with the race say Trump called Blakeman after the county executive entered the contest earlier this month and urged unity among Republicans, noting he did not like seeing "good Republicans" face off in a bruising primary.

Primary Stakes and Party Rules

Republicans, who view Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul as potentially vulnerable in 2026, had hoped to avoid an expensive and divisive primary. Under New York GOP rules, candidates must secure at least 25% of the weighted vote at the state party's February convention to automatically qualify for the June primary ballot; those who fall short must collect nominating petitions to appear on the ballot.

What Helped Propel Blakeman Into the Spotlight

Blakeman has attracted national attention for a hardline conservative platform that energized GOP voters on Long Island and beyond. Key issues that helped him win re-election as county executive included his positions on immigration enforcement, bans on transgender athletes competing in girls' sports, and the allocation of opioid settlement funds. Trump previously endorsed Blakeman's re-election campaign over the summer.

New York has not elected a Republican governor since George Pataki won a third term in 2002, making the 2026 contest one to watch as Republicans seek a path back to the governor's mansion.
