Tourist Stabbed Multiple Times In Macy’s Herald Square Restroom While Changing Baby; Suspect Arrested

A 39-year-old tourist from California was stabbed multiple times inside the Macy’s flagship store at Herald Square on Dec. 11 while changing her baby in a restroom, police say. The woman sustained several stab wounds to her back and a laceration to her left arm and was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
New York Police Department officers responded to Macy’s following a report of an assault, the NYPD confirmed to PEOPLE. Authorities arrested 43-year-old Kerri Aherne of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, in connection with the attack.
Law enforcement sources cited by FOX 5 NY say Aherne allegedly entered the restroom where the victim was changing her infant and began stabbing her in what sources described as an apparently unprovoked assault. It was not immediately clear whether the infant was injured.
The NYPD says Aherne was charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and child endangerment. As of Friday afternoon, online court dockets showed no records for Aherne, and it was not immediately clear whether she had retained an attorney. The NYPD did not provide additional comment to PEOPLE.
