Intruder Allegedly Breaks Into Bangor Apartment, Unwraps Christmas Gifts and Naps on Couch

A Bangor tenant discovered a 50-year-old man asleep on their couch on Nov. 23 with unwrapped Christmas gifts nearby. The suspect, identified as Jose Harvey of Milford, allegedly refused to leave and was arrested on a charge of aggravated criminal trespass; jail records show he was released by Nov. 30. Authorities said a bathroom window had been open while doors were locked. The Bangor Police used the incident to urge residents to check locks, hide packages from view and be considerate during the holidays.

Police say a Bangor tenant woke on the morning of Sunday, Nov. 23 to find a 50-year-old man sleeping on their living-room couch with unwrapped Christmas presents nearby. The tenant called police around 8:40 a.m. after confronting the stranger, who allegedly refused to leave the apartment.

Authorities identified the suspect as Jose Harvey of Milford. When officers arrived, they reported that Harvey could not provide a coherent explanation for why he was inside the residence. Officers also noted that several gifts near where he was found had been unwrapped.

The tenant told police that a bathroom window had been left open while the apartment's doors remained locked. Based on the circumstances, Harvey was arrested and charged with aggravated criminal trespass and taken to the Penobscot County Jail; public jail records indicate he was released by Nov. 30.

Police safety reminder

'It goes without saying that doing a routine check of your window and door locks is a prudent exercise in this day and age. I know, we shouldn't have to—it makes us sad, too,' the Bangor Police Department said in a public post. 'Surprises like this don't put any of us in a festive mood, but even the Grinch figured out the chimney is always an option.'

The department urged residents to lock windows and doors, keep gifts and packages out of sight in vehicles and on doorsteps, and to exercise common courtesy toward others during the holiday season: 'Keep your hands to yourself, leave other people's things alone, and be kind to one another.'

There has been no publicly reported motive or further explanation for the suspect's presence in the apartment. The incident is a reminder to review home-security habits as the holidays approach.
