Trump 'Resolutely Focused' on Affordability, USDA Secretary Says — Egg Price Claim Draws Scrutiny

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said President Trump is "resolutely focused" on lowering everyday costs and has asked officials to reduce prices such as eggs. Rollins claimed an 86% drop in egg prices over nearly 10 months, a figure that contrasts with independent CPI data showing eggs fell about 1.3% year‑over‑year. CPI also shows beef up 14.7% and overall inflation at roughly 3% since September 2024, about one percentage point above the Fed target. Rollins said the White House is addressing outliers like housing and fuel and expects the public to be encouraged.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said President Donald Trump is concentrating on actions to make everyday goods more affordable as the new year approaches, linking the push to slipping public approval on the economy.

"Brooke, we’re not going to have plastic eggs at the Easter Egg Roll at the White House. Go get the price of eggs down." — President Trump, as recounted by Rollins

Rollins told Fox Business that, according to the administration's accounting, egg prices have fallen 86 percent in almost 10 months. She added that the president has been "resolutely focused on making America more affordable again."

Independent data present a more mixed picture. Recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures show eggs are down about 1.3 percent year-over-year, while dairy costs have been largely stable. By contrast, beef is up 14.7 percent, bacon has risen 5.8 percent, and pork is up roughly 1.6 percent over the past year.

Overall inflation has increased about 3.0 percent since September 2024, roughly one percentage point above the Federal Reserve's 2 percent target.

On Fox Business's "Kudlow," Rollins said the administration is targeting remaining problem areas: "We have a few outliers that we’re working on right now, but he’s incredibly focused on this. Fuel is down."

She also highlighted housing, noting that shelter — which she described as "about 40 percent of the cost-of-living basket" — has declined year-over-year recently and, she asserted, is down "almost 14 percent since the president took office."

Rollins expressed confidence that Americans would be encouraged by the administration's actions. Independent analysts caution that price trends vary by category and that headline inflation remains above the Fed target, leaving room for continued scrutiny of the administration's claims and measures.
