Boeing Secures $2.47B Contract for 15 More KC-46A Tankers for U.S. Air Force

Boeing has been awarded a $2.47 billion contract to deliver 15 more KC-46A Pegasus refueling tankers to the U.S. Air Force. This follows a similar 15-aircraft award last year worth $2.38 billion. Israel indicated plans to buy two KC-46As for about $500 million, and Boeing says 98 aircraft have been delivered since 2019. The program has faced issues such as foreign object debris and supplier-quality defects but remains in production.

Boeing announced it has won a $2.47 billion contract to supply 15 additional KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling tankers to the U.S. Air Force.

Key details:

  • Value: $2.47 billion for 15 KC-46A aircraft.
  • Context: Last year the Air Force awarded Boeing a similar 15-aircraft contract valued at $2.38 billion.
  • International interest: In August, Israel's defense ministry said it planned to purchase two KC-46A tankers for roughly $500 million.
  • Deliveries to date: Boeing reports the U.S. Air Force has received 98 KC-46As since 2019.

The KC-46A program has experienced technical and quality-control challenges, including incidents involving foreign object debris (FOD), supplier-quality issues and other defects. Despite those setbacks, the program is moving forward with additional orders aimed at modernizing the Air Force's aerial refueling fleet.

This contract continues Boeing's production run of the KC-46A and supports the Air Force's efforts to maintain and expand its tanker capacity.
