Rep. Khanna Calls Trump’s Targeting of MTG 'Retaliation' as DOJ Given 27 Days to Release Epstein Files

The Justice Department has 27 days to release Jeffrey Epstein records after President Trump signed the bill into law. House Oversight Democrats warn of an "intense coverup" and fear the White House or DOJ may withhold material. Rep. Robert Garcia reminded AG Pam Bondi that she remains under subpoena to turn over the complete files. Rep. Ro Khanna called President Trump's singling out of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene "retaliation," urging that the focus stay on full, nonpartisan disclosure.

The Justice Department has 27 days to make public the Jeffrey Epstein files after President Trump signed the bill into law this week. The countdown has intensified scrutiny from House Oversight Democrats, who warn that the White House may try to block or withhold records.

In a Friday letter, Rep. Robert Garcia, the committee's top Democrat, reminded Attorney General Pam Bondi that she remains under subpoena and must turn over the complete files to the committee. Democrats say full transparency is critical given the sensitive nature of the material and the public interest in the investigation.

Rep. Ro Khanna also weighed in, criticizing President Trump for singling out Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. "Sad to see the retaliation," Khanna said, calling the targeting of a member of Congress over the release of these records inappropriate and politically motivated. Khanna and other Democrats say the focus should remain on ensuring the files are released intact and without political interference.

What’s at stake

Lawmakers argue that the Epstein files could contain information vital to ongoing inquiries and to victims seeking accountability. Oversight committee Democrats have urged the Justice Department to comply quickly and completely with the subpoena so the public can review the records without delay.

"Attorney General Bondi remains under subpoena to produce the complete set of records," Rep. Garcia wrote, underscoring the committee's demand for cooperation.

As the 27-day deadline approaches, both congressional leaders and the public will be watching closely to see whether the Department of Justice complies or whether further legal and political battles will follow.
