China has commissioned the Fujian, its third aircraft carrier and the first designed and built domestically, state media reported.
The ceremony on Hainan island was attended by President Xi Jinping after the vessel completed extensive sea trials. Analysts say the carrier will help the People’s Liberation Army Navy operate farther from China’s coast.
The Fujian is seen as a tangible sign of Xi’s military modernization plan, which aims for a modernized force by 2035 and a "world-class" navy by mid-century, a goal many interpret as seeking parity with the U.S.
