Donald Trump posted AI-generated images on Truth Social imagining Greenland as American territory, featuring penguins draped in U.S. flags. A pro‑MAGA persona on X amplified the idea, but the trilateral agreement discussed at the U.N. General Assembly did not transfer sovereignty. The pact builds on a 1951 U.S.–Denmark treaty that allows a U.S. military presence with NATO approval. Biographer Michael Wolff says the chaotic online strategy appears deliberate and was effective in 2024.
Trump’s AI Greenland Fantasy: Penguins, Propaganda and a Political Strategy

Donald Trump, 80, spent a recent Sunday sharing a new series of AI-generated images and posts that imagined Greenland as effectively under American control. The centerpiece image — posted on Truth Social — shows the back of Trump’s glossy head as he surveys a snowy vista filled with penguins draped in U.S. flags.
A pro‑MAGA persona on X calling itself Gunther Eagleman — a handle tied to a fired police officer, David Freeman — amplified the theme, posting boastful commentary alongside one of Trump’s AI images: "HELLO, GREENLAND! Trump's still thinking big. Strategic. Resource-rich. Arctic dominance... Promises kept."
What the Posts Actually Mean
Despite the imagery and rhetoric, the posts do not reflect any U.S. acquisition of Greenland. Last month, Trump suggested he would only accept a Greenland under full U.S. control, but the trilateral agreement he later touted after talks at the U.N. General Assembly in New York fell far short of any outright takeover.
In fact, the pact builds on a 1951 treaty between the United States and Denmark that already permits a U.S. military presence on the island and contains provisions for further expansion only with NATO approval. The recent agreement therefore represents an extension of existing arrangements, not a transfer of sovereignty.
A Broader Pattern
Unconstrained by such legal and diplomatic realities, Trump has increasingly relied on AI-generated posts and imagery — ranges from stylized, fabricated meetings with George Washington to inflammatory and offensive memes targeting prominent figures such as Barack and Michelle Obama.
Michael Wolff, the president’s biographer, told The Daily Beast podcast Inside Trump's Head that the social media approach appears deliberate. "The social media strategy is something that was... very precisely developed," Wolff said, suggesting the tactic breaks through conventional political seriousness and resonated during the 2024 campaign.
Whether viewed as surreal performance art or deliberate political theater, the Greenland images underscore how AI visuals and social platforms are being used to shape narratives that outpace diplomatic and legal realities.
