Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., San Carlos, Chile Expands Recall for Frozen Organic Berries

Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. has expanded a recall of frozen organic berries after FDA alerts about possible E. coli contamination. Newly recalled lots include Great Value organic triple berry blend and organic blueberries sold at Walmart and a mixed berry lot sold at Trader Joe's — specific lot codes are listed. Affected shipments reached dozens of U.S. states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Consumers should discard or return these products and seek medical advice if they develop symptoms.

Manufacturer Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile, has expanded a recall of frozen organic berries after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned that some lots may be contaminated with E. coli. The recall affects multiple brands and was updated following initial notices in July and September.

What Was Recalled

The latest expansion adds individually quick-frozen (IQF) organic blueberries and berry blends. Newly included items and lot codes are:

  • Great Value Frozen Organic Triple Berry Blend (10 oz): lot codes 6 031 01 and 6 041 01 — sold at Walmart
  • Great Value Frozen Organic Blueberries: lot codes 6 019 01, 6 040 01 and 6 163 01 — sold at Walmart
  • Trader Joe's Frozen Organic Mixed Berry Blend: lot code 6 051 01

Where Products Were Distributed

Previously recalled GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries were sold at Publix stores in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. A September expansion covered frozen berries shipped to Walmart stores in 16 states.

The newly recalled Great Value items were distributed to Walmart stores in 30 states and Puerto Rico: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico.

The Trader Joe's lot was shipped to stores in 26 states and Washington, D.C.: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin, plus Washington, D.C.

Health Risk and Consumer Guidance

E. coli infection can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. Most healthy people recover within about a week, but young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for serious complications.

Consumers should not eat the recalled products. Instead, discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. If you think you became ill after consuming any of these products, contact your healthcare provider and your local health department. For more details, consult the FDA recall notice or contact the retailer where you purchased the product.
