Police in north Wales have opened a confidential helpline after a newborn girl’s body was found on the Menai Strait shoreline near Siliwen Road in Bangor. A post-mortem confirmed the infant was female and suggested she may have been in the water for up to a few weeks. Authorities say a trained specialist will take calls from the mother and urged anyone with information, or photos and videos from the area between 30 August and 27 September, to come forward.

Police in north Wales have set up a dedicated, confidential helpline and are urgently appealing for information after the body of a newborn girl was found on the Menai Strait shoreline near Siliwen Road in Bangor, Gwynedd. The baby was discovered by a member of the public on Sunday shortly before 17:00 BST.

An update from North Wales Police says a post-mortem examination confirmed the infant was female and indicated she may have been in the water for up to a few weeks. Officers are treating the matter as a sensitive investigation and are asking for help from the public to establish the circumstances.

Support For The Mother

Superintendent Llinos Davies said the force has arranged for a trained specialist to take calls from the baby’s mother directly and provide confidential support. The specialist’s role, she said, is to listen, understand and help, and the conversation will be handled with compassion, dignity and respect.

We understand you may be scared to come forward, but we urge you to contact us. Your welfare and safety remain our priority, and you will receive any medical attention and support you need,

Davies encouraged the mother not to be afraid to speak to police and suggested that if making the call feels too difficult she consider telling a trusted person who can help her reach out, such as a friend, family member, neighbour or healthcare professional. North Wales Police emphasised that the helpline is intended strictly for the baby’s mother to seek specialist help.

Appeal To The Public

Fiona Giraud, director of midwifery and women’s services for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, also made a direct appeal for the mother to come forward. Police asked anyone who routinely walked in the Siliwen Road and Ashley Fields areas of Bangor between 30 August and 27 September to contact them, and requested any photos or video taken in and around the Menai Strait shoreline in Siliwen during that period be uploaded to the force’s major incident public portal to assist the investigation.

Officers said they are concerned the mother may not be in a position to seek help herself and therefore appealed more broadly to the father and anyone with possible knowledge—friends, family, neighbours or colleagues—to come forward. Superintendent Davies added that all names provided would be treated with the utmost discretion and asked the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the baby’s death.
