President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Oct. 1 that Ukraine used the FP-7 tactical ballistic missile in combat for the first time, thanking those involved and urging production. He did not disclose the location or target. Analysts put the FP-7's range at about 200 km (125 miles), and manufacturer Fire Point says the missile is part of the European Freyja anti-ballistic programme. Kyiv is aiming for a Freyja prototype in the first half of next year.

Ukraine announced on Oct. 1 that it used the FP-7 tactical ballistic missile in combat for the first time, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Telegram. He thanked those involved and called for production to begin, while providing no details on the location or target.

"Ukrainian tactical ballistic missile FP-7. First combat use," Zelenskiy wrote, adding: "Thank you for the result. Next - production."

Background and capabilities

Ukrainian military analysts describe the FP-7 as a short-range tactical ballistic missile with an approximate range of 200 km (125 miles). The missile's manufacturer, Fire Point, says the FP-7 is being developed as a ballistic interceptor within the Freyja European missile-defence programme launched this year.

Programme timeline and context

Ukraine aims to have a Freyja prototype ready in the first half of next year, Deputy Secretary Davyd Aloian said in July. Russia frequently uses ballistic missiles in strikes on Ukrainian targets; Kyiv has viewed development of its own tactical ballistic systems as a key element of its defence strategy.

What remains unclear: Zelenskiy did not disclose where the FP-7 was used or what target it struck, and the announcement did not include independent verification of the reported combat use.
