Haneef “Lew” Palmer, 33, was sentenced to 121 months in federal prison for his role in a Philadelphia cargo-theft ring that stole more than $1.5 million in goods, including frozen crab legs, electronics and about $230,000 in dimes. Palmer pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges and was ordered to pay $1,080,786.44 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release. The crimes—committed across a seven-month span in 2023—targeted unattended tractor-trailers and included violent conduct against at least one driver.

Haneef “Lew” Palmer, 33, a Philadelphia man once linked to rapper Meek Mill, was sentenced to 121 months in federal prison for his role in an organized cargo-theft operation that prosecutors say stole more than $1.5 million in goods during a seven-month spree in 2023.

Details of the Case

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. District Chief Judge Wendy Beetlestone imposed the sentence earlier this month. In addition to the prison term, Palmer was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and to pay $1,080,786.44 in restitution.

Federal prosecutors described Palmer as a central member of a mobile crew that targeted unattended tractor-trailers across Philadelphia. The group treated parked rigs like temporary warehouses—striking overnight or while drivers slept, forcing open trailers with bolt cutters and other tools, and hauling entire loads into waiting vehicles to be sold locally.

Notable Thefts

By the time law enforcement dismantled the operation, more than 10 victims had reported losses totaling over $1.5 million. Among the heists that drew attention were stolen frozen crab legs, televisions and commercial refrigerators.

The most widely publicized incident occurred on April 13, 2023, when surveillance footage showed six hooded men cutting into a trailer that was transporting coins from the U.S. Mint. The crew escaped with roughly $230,000—about 2.3 million dimes—leaving loose coins scattered across a Walmart parking lot in Northeast Philadelphia. The theft was widely dubbed the city’s “coin caper.”

Twelve days earlier, on April 1, 2023, prosecutors say Palmer participated in the robbery of a tractor-trailer carrying commercial refrigerators; authorities say the driver was attacked and sustained injuries during that incident.

Charges and Plea

Palmer pleaded guilty to multiple federal counts, including conspiracy, Hobbs Act robbery (a federal statute covering robbery and extortion affecting interstate commerce), possession of property stolen from an interstate shipment, theft and possession of government money, and five counts related to theft from interstate shipments. Federal authorities added a superseding indictment in December 2024; Palmer later pleaded guilty in March 2026, according to court records and prosecutors.

Past Association With Meek Mill

The sentencing renewed attention to Palmer’s past association with Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill. The two knew one another from growing up in the same city and had been connected through local music and street circles, but media reports and prosecutors note that Meek Mill severed ties with Palmer around 2016 and the two have been estranged since.

This case underscores how organized crews exploited vulnerabilities in overnight freight storage and the financial and physical risks such thefts pose to drivers, shippers and communities.
