Online posts have circulated a 19-second clip that falsely suggests former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton told Taiwan to "abandon resistance." A review of the full 18-minute interview on MS NOW's Morning Joe shows the short excerpt removes crucial context and reverses the meaning of Clinton's remarks.
The misleading clip, shared on September 14, 2026, in traditional Chinese on Facebook and later spread across X, YouTube, Threads, TikTok, Douyin and Weibo, quotes a line that—out of context—appears to urge Taiwan to give up. The full interview, posted to YouTube on September 10, makes clear Clinton was describing a hypothetical assessment of how Chinese leader Xi Jinping might view US vulnerabilities amid an ammunition shortfall tied to the war with Iran.
What Clinton Actually Said
In the full segment, Clinton criticizes what she called "very wrong-headed decisions" by the Trump administration in its handling of the Iran conflict and warns that continued attacks are depleting US interceptors and munitions. Her comments include a hypothetical summary of how adversaries might interpret that depletion:
