The Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center will give away thousands of free tickets each season to broaden access to its performances, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Thursday.
Under the new initiative, dubbed "Opera for All," the Met will allocate 70,000 tickets per season to New Yorkers via a citywide lottery. The program is being rolled out in partnership with the City Council and is intended to open the institution to residents who might otherwise be priced out.
The Met says that roughly one-third of its tickets are typically priced under $100, though prices can rise sharply for premium seats close to the stage. Free tickets from the Opera for All pool will be distributed across every seating section of the house except standing room.
"Opera is one of the greatest art forms we have, and there is no better place to experience it than the Metropolitan Opera House," Mamdani said. "But art should not be reserved for those who can afford it. Every New Yorker should have the opportunity to sit in these seats, hear these voices and experience this stage, no matter what's in their bank account."
The Met, based at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, is one of the world’s leading opera houses and is currently presenting productions including Macbeth and La Bohème. On its website the institution described itself as both a globally recognized cultural icon and New York’s opera house — an essential institution that belongs to the city’s residents.
Mamdani has previously announced similar affordability initiatives for live events this year, including programs to provide free or discounted tickets for Broadway shows, the US Open and the World Cup. Details about the lottery application process, eligibility and timing will be shared by the Met and the City Council ahead of the first ticket distribution.
