Michael Wolff, the author and longtime biographer of President Donald Trump, told the podcast Inside Trump’s Head with Joanna Coles that Trump’s recent attacks on institutions are a deliberate political strategy: he thrives on creating enemies. Wolff argued that the president uses conflict as political fuel, even when that conflict is directed at officials he helped place in power.
Wolff said Trump prefers a simple, combustible narrative to a nuanced explanation. “This is the thing that he always looks for. This is the conflict,” Wolff told Coles, adding that Trump has chosen to cast the federal courts as the villain rather than grapple with the complicated policy debate over mail-in voting.

The escalation followed the Supreme Court’s rejection of the administration’s bid to limit mail-in ballots. In response, Trump attacked the justices on his Truth Social platform, asserting that the court he nominated were “not the people I interviewed” and accusing them of being influenced by political opponents.
“This Supreme Court is bullied and cajoled by the Radical Left into making decisions that have set America back at least a hundred years,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “They are merely a shell of their original selves, a Court that is costing the United States Trillions of Dollars with shockingly bad rulings that are of such magnitude that it won’t be easily possible for our Country to recover or heal.”
Wolff pointed out the irony that three of the conservative justices who joined the majority in the ruling were among those Trump personally nominated: Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh. All three sided with the majority to reject the administration’s proposed limits on mail-in ballots, while Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas were the sole dissenters.

“There is no logic here. The... logic is only the conflict,” Wolff said, describing Trump’s impulse to pick an adversary and demonize them: “Who is my enemy? Let me vilify my enemy.” Wolff argued Trump now faces a political dilemma: the judges he appointed are not reliably delivering the outcomes he expects, so he has to recast them as part of the opposition.
Wolff described Trump’s repeated framing of the “radical left” and “Democratic Socialists” as the singular midterm issue as a deliberate tactic: repetition simplifies the story and energizes his base. “It’s pathetic, of course. It’s intellectually pathetic, but for what Trump is doing, it’s identifying a conflict and having him stand up,” Wolff said, noting that the approach will solidify MAGA supporters even if it alienates independents and Democrats.
