Nigerian authorities say they arrested an alleged Mexican drug kingpin last month at Lagos International Airport, an arrest that reportedly led investigators to a suspected industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Ebonyi State. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says digital images and their location metadata found on the suspect's devices helped link him to the site.

Officials have named the suspect as Arturo Carrera Loaiza, 40. According to the NDLEA, photos on his electronic devices showed a man resembling Loaiza wearing a laboratory coat alongside equipment consistent with meth production. Location metadata from those images reportedly pointed investigators to a property in Ebonyi State where officers later seized chemicals and manufacturing equipment.

Raids and Seized Equipment
NDLEA investigators say they recovered a CCTV memory card at the suspected facility that contained footage of an individual wearing a blue laboratory coat who resembled Loaiza. Officers also identified a Nigerian man in the footage directing people as they removed chemicals and equipment from the site.
Follow-up raids at an isolated house in a neighbouring community allegedly uncovered a range of production apparatus, including dehydrators, condensers, a reaction pot, mixers, weighing scales, drums, gas burners and a sieve testing positive for traces of methamphetamine. The agency has not provided an estimate of the facility's potential output.

Allegations of a Wider Network
The NDLEA says investigators believe Loaiza recruited at least one other Mexican national to work at a separate suspected meth lab hidden in a forest in Oyo State; that site was raided in June and four Nigerians were arrested. The agency also points to an earlier operation in which three Mexican nationals and seven Nigerians were detained at another alleged industrial-scale laboratory in a forested area.
Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, chairman of the NDLEA, warned: "Nigeria will not be allowed to become a haven for transnational drug cartels seeking to relocate their laboratories from other jurisdictions into our forests and rural communities."
Why West Africa Attracts Organized Crime
Authorities note that synthetic drugs such as methamphetamine can be manufactured anywhere that has the necessary chemicals and expertise, unlike plant-based drugs that require specific climates. Large tracts of secluded forest and rural areas in West Africa are said to offer cover and logistical advantages for organised criminal groups seeking to establish clandestine production sites.
Ongoing Investigation
The NDLEA says its probe into the network is ongoing, including inquiries into individuals who may have financed or facilitated the operations inside Nigeria. Loaiza has denied involvement in meth production, telling investigators he was invited to Nigeria by a local contact to discuss a restaurant business venture. No charges or formal indictments have been announced publicly at this time.
