Last week in Dallas, Texas, Trump headlined the first night of the GOP midterm convention. That same evening the NFL kicked off its 2026 season as the Seattle Seahawks faced the New England Patriots — a rematch of February’s Super Bowl — drawing major national attention.
Ratings In Contrast
According to a report from CNN’s Brian Stelter, the TV audience for the NFL matchup topped 25 million viewers, while Trump’s speech reached roughly 3 million viewers. The disparity was clear once Nielsen published its figures.

Despite the numbers, the president had already proclaimed victory the morning after the event. On Truth Social he wrote, "The overall numbers beat the NFL," a claim made before official ratings were available.
Bottom line: Nielsen’s data contradicted the early assertion that the convention outperformed the NFL opener, with the football game drawing an order of magnitude more viewers.
