Angie Nixon stunned observers by defeating Alex Vindman 56% to 44% in Florida's Democratic U.S. Senate primary, despite a large fundraising disparity. Republicans immediately framed Nixon's nomination as a November advantage in a state that has shifted right, and Sen. Ashley Moody remains the strong general-election favorite. Meanwhile, Byron Donalds and David Jolly won gubernatorial nominations in Florida, Alaska's top-four primary produced a Sullivan–Peltola Senate rematch, and Wyoming delivered mixed results for Trump-endorsed candidates.

Angie Nixon pulled off a surprise victory in Florida's Democratic U.S. Senate primary, defeating retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman by roughly 12 points on Tuesday night. With nearly all precincts reporting, Nixon captured about 56% of the vote to Vindman's 44%, marking a notable win for progressive forces in a state that has trended Republican in recent years.

Financial and political dynamics: Vindman entered the race with national name recognition and a far larger campaign war chest—reportedly around $16 million—while Nixon's campaign reported roughly $974,000. That gap made Nixon's upset especially striking and immediately prompted Republican strategists to portray her nomination as an advantage heading into November, arguing it makes it easier to link Democrats to the party's left flank in a red-tilting state.

Reactions and endorsements: Former President Donald Trump celebrated Vindman's defeat on Truth Social, using harsh language to describe both candidates. Nixon drew support from progressive figures and members of Congress, while Vindman secured endorsements from established Democrats including Sens. Mark Kelly, Jack Reed and Tammy Duckworth and other party leaders.

What’s at stake: Nixon will now face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November for the remainder of the current term. Moody, a former state attorney general appointed to the Senate seat by Gov. Ron DeSantis, is widely viewed as the favorite in the general election; nonpartisan handicappers rate the seat strongly Republican and polling has shown Moody with a lead in head-to-head matchups.

Broader Democratic dynamics: Nixon’s victory underscores an intraparty tension between progressive/DSA-aligned challengers and more moderate or establishment Democrats. While progressive candidates have won primaries in other parts of the country this cycle—typically in blue or purple states—Florida’s political landscape makes Nixon’s nomination especially consequential for November messaging and turnout.

Florida Governor’s Race

The gubernatorial primaries produced the expected front-runners: Republican Rep. Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly emerged as their parties’ nominees for the open governor’s race. Donalds, who ran with President Trump’s endorsement and a substantial fundraising advantage—roughly $10.2 million reported recently—enters the fall campaign as the heavy favorite. Jolly, a former Republican congressman who left the GOP over his opposition to Trump and later ran as an independent, has emphasized housing, insurance costs and education in his pitch to voters.

Other Notable Florida Results

Incumbent Democrats held off progressive challengers in several closely watched South Florida House primaries. Rep. Jared Moskowitz won in the newly redrawn 25th District, and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz prevailed in a different district after redistricting. In a high-profile GOP primary upset, Trump-endorsed Rep. Cory Mills lost to Ryan Elijah amid ethics investigations and mounting allegations against Mills.

Outside Florida: Alaska and Wyoming

Alaska’s all-party primary narrowed a pivotal Senate contest: incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola advanced to November in a field of 16 candidates under the state’s top-four system. The race has attracted heavy outside spending and will be closely watched for its potential implications for Senate control.

In Wyoming, Trump’s endorsements produced mixed results. His preferred Senate candidate, Rep. Harriet Hageman, won the GOP nomination and is now the clear favorite in that reliably Republican seat. But his choice for governor was rejected: State Sen. Eric Barlow won the GOP gubernatorial nomination, defeating Trump-endorsed Megan Degenfelder.

Outlook

Although Nixon’s primary victory is a significant upset, statewide conditions still favor Republicans in Florida this fall—GOP voter registration leads and historical trends give Republican nominees an advantage. Nevertheless, a competitive governor’s race and a few closely watched Senate contests nationally mean both parties will continue investing heavily into November.
