President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that Will Scharf, a longtime aide, will become the new White House counsel beginning in September. Scharf will replace David Warrington, a personal attorney to the president who joined the administration at the start of Mr. Trump's second term and is returning to private practice.
In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump praised Scharf's background and experience:
"I know Will well! He previously represented me in numerous cases, including at the Supreme Court, during the Biden Administration's corrupt and illegal campaign of Weaponization. He also previously served as a Federal Prosecutor, worked as an attorney in private practice, clerked for two Federal Appeals Court Judges, and was a top student at both Princeton University, and Harvard Law School.
Will is Tough, Strong, and Smart! He also loves our Country, and respects the Law. Will Scharf will do a great job as White House Counsel!"

Scharf has held several roles in the Trump White House, including serving as White House staff secretary and as chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission. The Wall Street Journal noted that he is often the aide who presents executive orders to the president in the Oval Office. As chairman of the planning commission, Scharf has overseen construction projects, including the new White House ballroom.

The announcement comes a day after the Senate confirmed Mr. Trump's nominee for attorney general, Todd Blanche. In his role as staff secretary, Scharf recently presented executive orders aimed at curbing so-called "birth tourism," which include provisions restricting citizenship for certain children born in the U.S. to parents linked to "federally declared terrorist groups" or who allegedly entered the country deceptively.
Trump said in his Truth Social message that Scharf has done an "amazing job" as both staff secretary and chairman of the planning commission. The administration said Warrington will return to the private sector.
